Never Hire a Storm Chaser

Protect yourself from fly-by-night roofing contractors.

Within hours of a major storm in the Katy or Houston area, something predictable happens: trucks with out-of-state license plates appear in your neighborhood, and strangers start knocking on doors offering "free" roof inspections. These are storm chasers — roofing contractors who travel from city to city following severe weather events, collect as many contracts as possible, do the work fast (and often poorly), then move on to the next storm.

Here is why they are risky and how to protect yourself.

Red Flags of a Storm Chaser

They knock on your door unsolicited after a storm

Legitimate local roofers do not need to canvass neighborhoods. They have established reputations and existing customer bases. Door-to-door solicitation immediately after a storm is the #1 indicator of a storm chaser.

They pressure you to sign a contract immediately

Phrases like "we only have a few spots left" or "this offer expires today" are high-pressure sales tactics. A reputable contractor gives you time to compare quotes and make an informed decision.

They offer to pay or waive your deductible

This is insurance fraud in the state of Texas. Any contractor who offers to cover your deductible is breaking the law — and will likely cut corners on materials or workmanship to make up the difference.

They have no local office or address

Ask for a physical business address (not a P.O. box). Storm chasers operate out of trucks and hotel rooms. If they leave town, you have no one to call when problems arise.

They ask for large upfront payments

Legitimate contractors working with insurance do not need significant money upfront. If someone asks for 50% or more before starting, it is a major red flag.

They have no online reviews or history

Search their company name on Google, Yelp, and the BBB. Storm chasers either have no history or a trail of complaints from previous storm areas.

The Real Risks

Storm chasers create real problems that homeowners end up paying for:

  • 1. Substandard work — They use the cheapest materials and rush installations. Improperly nailed shingles blow off in the next storm, and you are back to square one.
  • 2. No warranty support — When their "lifetime warranty" has an issue in 2 years, the company is 3 states away chasing the next storm. Good luck making a warranty claim.
  • 3. Voided manufacturer warranties — Most major shingle manufacturers (Owens Corning, CertainTeed, GAF) require installation by certified contractors for warranty coverage. Storm chasers rarely hold these certifications.
  • 4. Insurance complications — If they inflate the claim or commit fraud, you — the homeowner — are ultimately responsible. Insurance companies can cancel your policy.
  • 5. Property damage — Untrained crews damage landscaping, siding, and windows during installation. With no local presence, getting them to fix it is nearly impossible.

How to Find a Trustworthy Local Roofer

  • Local office with a physical address — they are invested in the community
  • Established history — look for 5+ years in the area with consistent reviews
  • Manufacturer certifications — Owens Corning Preferred, CertainTeed SELECT, GAF Certified
  • BBB rating — check for an A+ rating and complaint history
  • Proper insurance — ask for a Certificate of Insurance (general liability + workers comp)
  • Written detailed estimate — not a verbal quote or handshake deal
  • No pressure — a good roofer wants you to make the right decision, not a fast one
